C:\WINDOWS\system32\IMM32.dll is not a valid Windows image.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 using Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.

All Windows Updates have been applied to my system.

Service Pack 1 and 2 have been applied.

My problem began when I knocked over a lamp and tripped the circuit breaker for that line.  The lamp was on the same electrical circuit that my computer is plugged into.  I reset the circuit breaker and restored power.  As far as I know, my computer was just sitting idle when this happened.  My computer is plugged into a surge protector.

After I brought my computer back up, I encountered no problems until I tried to access my e-mail account on www.dellnet.msn.com.

When I click on my e-mail icon and select read mail, I get the following message:

MSN.EXE – Bad Image

The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\IMM32.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

                                                                                   OK

When I press enter to respond to the OK, I get the following message:

We were unable to load a required library msnmetal.dll

Error Code: 0x000000c1

                                                                                   OK

I have tried to locate information on what caused this problem and how to restore my software to the way it had existed before the power failure.  So far, all that I have found out from reading Microsoft support is that … imm32.dll is a library used by the Microsoft Windows Input Method Manager (IMM).

Has anyone experienced this problem?  Can anyone recommend a site that discusses Microsoft software problems?

You might try just running system restore to the point before this happened.

Thanks for your response.  I did do a system restore from before it happened, Still experienced the problem.  Went back, restored from earlier dates, did not make any difference.

Go to Start|Run and enter this command: control folders

Click the "View" tab
Check "Show hidden files and folders" AND uncheck "Hide protected operating  system files"

Then make your way to (C:\windows\)system32
Find the imm32.dll file. Right-click on it. Select rename. Type in imm32.dll.old
Close all and restart computer. Try your program.
