Swell...everybody pointing the finger somewhere else.
Install any new hardware or software recently?
Try running a windows system file check:
start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok
Insert XP CD if sfc requests it. Reboot when it's done. sfc will replace any damaged or missing XP system files.
See if User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (uphclean.exe), free from Microsoft will solve the problem, at least until somebody can point you at the hotfix.
This has become a common problem and neither Dell (I have a Dell) nor Microsoft have solved the problem. I've run the "hotfix" from Microsoft as suggested and it didn't work. I set AutoEndTask to "1" in the HKCU/Control Panel/Desktop (as suggested by someone else) and that didn't work. I've sent a letter describing the problem and the lack of attention by these two giants to the Fed AG's department. Perhaps if enough people did the same then something might happen. In the meantime, Microsoft are overwhelmed with making money and too busy to fix their problems, good luck!
i tried running sfc a couple of weeks ago as you suggest but couldn't get passed a request for an XP CD. For some reason it couldn't find what it was looking for on my MediaDirect edition CD supplied by Dell. My XP was pre-installed.
Do you know what file sfc wanted, but couldn't find? Look in Event Viewer for Windows File Protection entries at the time you ran sfc. It should list the error/missing file.
Request a replacement Windows CD from Dell (free). Start here.
tks for the CD link... i'll probably use it to see what they send me. As 4 sfc, once i work up the motivation to run it again and dig into event viewer to find what file/s it's expecting, the prompt doesn't give any clues (that would be to easy of course). i'll post the result once i have it.

Is this the hotfix you installed?
Are there any error messages in the Windows Event Viewer?
