Defrag problems

I have a Dimension XPS T450. It's REALLY slow lately. I updated my Norton antivirus program and did a  scan, did a disk cleanup and system scan. When I try to do a defrag, it never gets beyond 3% in the "Checking disk for errors" stage, even though I've closed all programs except Explorer and Systray.

Also, since I installed SBCYahoo DSL, I can't shut my computer down properly. I have to hit the button on the CPU!   It just won't shut down!  Any ideas?  I was told by SBC to uninstall, reinstall, etc. Nothing helps....

Thanks for any advice!

judyjr,

1.  Try to defrag in safe mode.

2.  You may find the shutdown problem answer here:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308029

Good luck,

Jane

Hi Jane
Eek! I just realized that I posted my message on the XP forum, but the computer that I'm having problems with is running Windows 98. Sorry!

Anyway, running the defrag in safe mode worked, although I got the lovely  "Illegal operation" message immediately upon its completion, and also several other ones when I tried to shut it down in safe mode).

I had to uninstall/reinstall Norton Antivirus a few days ago, but there was one file that wouldn't take....maybe that's adding to my problems.

Thanks so much for your time-  at least I got the defrag done!  Yay!

You should do a Scandisk to check for disk errors like lost files, damaged sectors now & before defragging. Might take care of that error message.

maybe you could try doing a system restore back to a point a few weeks back (before any of these problems started)?

Hi Mary,

I just did a Scandisk- thorough- it took hours. Then, when it was done, I got the same old "Illegal operation" message.   Aaarrgghhh

But thanks for your input-  any other suggestions?

ah, forgot about that. you could try reinstalling the operating system, although that should be something you do when NOTHING else works. my mom has an old compaq with windows 98, and it come with a quickrestore disc..did you get one of those?

I posted this in the wrong forum- I don't have XP on that computer, so I don't have the restore option. But thanks for your input!   Judy
