defragmenting won't work

Hi. When I try to defragment my computer, here's the message I get: "windows cannot defragment this drive because the drive contains errors that must first be repaired. To repair your drive click scandisk, and then try deframenting again. ID NO: defrag004"

The problem I have with this is that immediately before running the defrag, I did a complete scandisk and chose the 'fix errors' option. I didn't run any programs after doing the scandisk and the computer was still in safe mode. Anyone know what the problem is? I'm using Windows ME. Thanks.

sounds like a hard drive problem.  try running a detailed scan under the advanced options.

Try this.

Start > Run> trype cmd hit enter > type chkdsk /f hit enter > do whatever it asks you to do afterwards > then try running defrag again.

I tried that, but I got the error message, "Windows cannot find cmd."

javaman34,

Thank you for using the Dell Community  Forum.

If you have any anti-virus software or a firewall running turn them off and then try to defrag.

From Windows ME SECRETS by Livingston and Straub:

"Chkdsk (Check disk) is an outdated DOS command that deletes bad files when you specify the /f parameter. It doesn't work anymore in a Windows DOS session, and you should use the ScanDisk to fix files or the DOS commmand Mem to give you memory usage breakdown."

Additionally, cmd is valid in Windows XP but not in ME.

Okay let me put it in the long way.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

Then type chkdsk /f

Please post back with the outcome.
