Dell Command Update 5.5.0 will not install (Resolved)

Hello all,

I work on all kinds of Dell's and I have recently encountered this one. The first thing I did for one was I ran Dell SupportAssist (DSA), and then let the web install all updates, I was then able to install Dell Command Update (DCU). The next one I got this one, same thing DCU did not install. So, I did the same ran DSA, let the site scan for updates. But this time, I installed one update at a time, and the latest update for TPM was at the top of the list.

I installed the latest TPM update, restarted and then after the restart DCU 5.5.0 installed and is working. So, apparently, DCU 5.5.0 requires the latest TPM installed.

@Rich Downey  your way works good for me.   thanks again

I also found another way that seems to be working great also for my systems.

IF any of the Dell folders exist delete them and recreate manually

Create, change owner to "Authenticated Users" & give "Authenticated Users" full permissions to this and all subfolders

C:\Program Files\Dell

c:\ProgramData\Dell

C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell

Dell-Command-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_62KRK_WIN64_5.5.0_A00_02.exe

extract DCU to C:\Temp\DCU 5.5

use task manager kill windows explorer.

from admin cmd run

c:\temp\dcu 5.5>DellCommandUpdateApp_Setup.exe /S /v/qn

done this several times now and it works for me.
the permissions for C:\ProgramData\Dell   switch back but dell command keeps working.

Good afternoon, we are imaging by SCCM and install DELL 5.5.0 DCU with installed exist code seen. Then when we come to use software its gone!! Win 11 24H2 OS. Bit weird, were getting the hit on this as we have upped our OS security controls but this article seems to be relevant. Anyone get anything like this.  Looks like DEll DCU needs latest TPM and .NET. Unfortunately we need earlier installed .NET for other software, it is very weird! Cheers

@ISpencer55 can you install more then one version of dotNET, I know some computers we have have more then one. I know some apps can work with newer versions of dotNET as it should be backwards compatible. But, it is windows so, inherently garbage! LOL

@Amuro_Ray. This solution worked for me as well. I think you need to install BOTH the ASP.NET Core and the .NET Desktop runtimes.

Hi All

My method by which I installed DCU 5.5

1. Uninstall all DELL applications
2. Restart computer
3. Delete the DELL folders that remained after uninstalling the applications
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell.
- C:\Program Files\Dell
- C:\ProgramData\Dell
If you will have a problem with deleting any subdirectory, check if the user has sufficient permissions ( FULL CONTROL ). I had a case where the Administrators group only had READ & EXECUTE permissions.

3. Restart computer

4. Install DCU. The installer will also install Dell Core Services and Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime 8.x.x ( there is no need to install Runtime libraries previously )

Looks like Dell may have pulled DCU 5.5.0. I am getting Driver Unavailable errors or 404 - File or directory not found when trying to pull it down this morning...

The KB page https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000177325/dell-command-update still points to dead links for 5.5.0, but the official download page has reverted back to 5.4.0:

https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/command-update/drivers

Would appreciate anyone from Dell chiming in to let us know if we can expect a newer version to drop any time now, or if we should be reverting back to 5.4.0?

I already had .NET after the installation, it seemed to be complete but in fact, all the files under all \DELL folder were cleared.

After that, I could not find it during the uninstallation. It was useless to install it again. Even the installation of the old version (e.g: 5.4) failed. This is really a terrible and rubbish version.

Okay, i have same issue. 2 Dell latitude 5490s. 1st one, DCU and DSA "sort of" run okay. They both seem to die intermittently, with "can't run updates" or "cannot something at this time, try again." On the first one, I eventualy got all BIOS updates, chipset, etc., and windows patches, both are W11 pro, upgraded from the W10 they came with. Don't ask what method, I just did the 'upgrade assist' or similar, and they upgraded fine.

So, this 2nd one Dell L 5490, SupportAssist will not run at all. I first forgot I had the DSA and DCU from Windows 10, which it even shows in the Add/remove programs, so uninstalled anything I thought may be W10 specific (and rebooted), and also verified this is .Net 8.x, but I went ahead & installed .Net 9.x, since I saw an earlier article mentioned that these apps may run better with 9.x. Still, when going to Dell and downloading the DSA installer, it does the same: when you double-click it, it gives zero pop-ups, nothing, and just never runs.

Then, I figure I'll try the latest DCU, so I download and try that and get "The wizard was interrupted before Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal could be completely installed."

What the actual heck? I can manually do all the Chipset, BIOS, etc. updates, but this is "supposed to" make it easier! Come on Dell, you can do better than this! I'm not saying it's Dell's fault, but Dell should be able to help us figure out why this amazing app is one of THE most unstable in the known universe! Prior cases of working with DSA have been just as frustrating, with it hanging, etc. And, again, it maybe very well be a Windows update that is causing it, but this is freaking crazy and unacceptable to not be able to run these simple, time-saving utilities that Dell "claims" make our lives easier and more secure. Help !!! (I'm going to try to set the DCU install exe to run as admin for all users, and then also see if I can set it for W10 compatibility mode, since I did see a brief mention of "no compatible product found" in the installer log)

@SunnySouthTexas But did you also uninstall the .Net Desktop piece first?

@bruno.cidrais06 Okay, but my problem: I cannot even run Dell Support Assistant! Double-click the launcher and it just does nothing!

@Mike Ober This does NOT consistently work. DSA will not even install for me, on same model L 5490 that I just installed on 2 days ago.  This specific machine, the only real difference, it has a camera, where as the L 5490 where I was able to get DSA and DCU to work does not have a camera. I've struggled numerous time with DSA and DCU on various models, where it freezes or eats 100% CPU, and I end up having to uninstall it, and just manually pull the updates, which is painful.

@GarTrev This did nothing for me. DCU still tosses that error: "Something something was interrupted, try again."

@CyberneticOrganism When I had this issue, I started to download individual updates and install them. Starting with BIOS, and anything that had to do with chipset. That and sometimes the need to install dotNET 8.0, definitely look for the latest one.
