Dell Support Startup Error
Have received repeating error during each system startup, informing me that Dell Support has crashed & for me to send an error report to MS.
Have uninstalled Dell Support from control panel successfully but startup error continues. Have also downloaded new version of Dell Support and yet during installation I am told an error occurred while unzipping, error code 110.
Please can anyone help me to reinstall Dell Support or otherwise get rid of software / error completely . . .
Maybe remove a line of code in computer registry to stop PC from trying to load support.exe at startup.
Would be very appreciative for any help given. . .
Thanx in advance

Please post the exact wording of the message you are receiving at startup. You may be able to stop the offending application from loading at boot time by going to Start|Run, typing msconfig and clicking OK. If you can identify the culprit in the list on the Startup tab, uncheck it and it will no longer load with Windows.

Thanks For Replying
Error come up saying ...
Support has encountered a problem and needs to close. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. Send an error report by clicking on button below.
This appears every time my pc loads which suggests Dell Support is crashing at startup before applocation is loaded.
I have tried msconfig but I have a Windows XP machine and this feature is not included.
I would be happy with removing program from startup but I have already uninstalled the application and error continues to appear. . .
Thanks for the advice though.. Any further info you might have would be great. . .

I have exactly the same problem with my Dimension 4550. I have also uninstalled Dell Support but am still getting the error message at startup. Does anyone know what to disable to stop this in msconfig? Ideally I'd like the support software working again, but failing that an end to these annoying error messages would be great.
Thanks!

Have solved part of Dell Support Startup Error!!
Windows XP Users must download Advanced XP Tweak from http://www.tweakinternals.com/
Once downloaded and installed go to the Startup Manager within the program. Then uncheck the item DwlClient . . THATS IT !! THE ERROR SHOULD HAVE STOPPED APPEARING AT STARTUP !!
Windows 98 Users may try using this program also but it might not be compatible with their particular OS.
Try searching for Startup Managers at http://download.com instead!!
Contact Me If Unsure Of Any Of These Instructions . . .

Thanks for the tip-it's done the trick. Now all we have to do is work out how to get a working version of the software re-installed!
Thanks again.

If all else fails, try this: delete the support application folder.
Maybe not the best trick around, but worked for me. No more Support Error Message Yay!
Combined with the removal of the client from startup, and the deletion of a couple (about 2-3) registry keys, I think it's the best we can do for now.
What does support.exe does anyway? I'm curious....

It's ironic that a program provided by DELL, supposedly to solve problems, is actually causing them!
Come on DELL, take responsibility for your program and help us! I'm a loyal DELL customer at home and work!
It's somehow re-assuring to find other's with (I believe) the same problem. It's nice to know that it's "just not me"!
I have a DELL 4550 running XP home and get (what I think) is the same problem every time any of the four users log-in - and every time I run the DELL support program.
In my case it seemed to start after a major crash (the only real problem I've had) in July '03, which totally locked up the PC, requiring manual power-down. I have appended extracts from typical error messages below.
I, too, can not find anything on this in MS or DELL help. I finally spoke to the (free) DELL (hardware) support, who suggested I disable startup of everything via MSCONFIG, but no change - and no new ideas. I eventually spoke to the (paid) DELL software line, which, in its intro says "£19-99 per software resolution", but they actually mean per consultation, whether resolved or not! I also e-mailed DELL and so far no human response.
I tried a restore (back to point before problem started) and this appeared to stop the symptoms, ie. no more error messages - but I 'undid' this restore, because I would have had to re-install loads of fixes and Norton software - and also I suspect that 'system restore' leaves loads of redundant files (which are no loger accessed). I then tried to re-install Win XP, but to no avail - and I have now 'shot myself inthe foot', because it has wiped my restore history and so I can't try my restore again (in a more logical way).
All I can think to do now is keep looking for fixes and hope for action from DELL, or try total PC re-installation!
I want to put in place a clean and simple remedy, which doesn't turn an inconvenience into a saga!
Typical error report banner reads:- AppName: support.exe AppVer: 2.0.0.32
The following files will be included in this error report: C:\DOCUME~1\xxx~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7B.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt
Service program typical error report:-AppName: support.exe
Following files included:- C:\DOCUME~1\xxx~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERC.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

30/12/3:- I finally got some kind of 'closure', or 'resolution' on the support.exe error, which appeared on my Dimension 4550, running XP, as a banner every time a user logged in. I don't know to what extent it is a 'patch' or a 'solid' fix. The following; a culmination of an e-mail dialogue with DELL support:-
DELL: "I want to inform you that this is permanent fix for the Support.exe error. This applies to all system with this error."
DELL: "I would suggest you to perform the following steps to resolve the error message.
Click the Start button, and then click Run.
In the Open box type the following text: Regedit.exe.
Click the OK button.
Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
NOTE: When you click the plus sign (+) next to a folder, it will expand displaying the folders it contains in the left-pane of the Registry Editor. When a folder is highlighted, its contents will be displayed in the right-pane of the Registry Editor.
Click the plus sign (+) next to SOFTWARE.
Click the plus sign (+) next to DELL.
Click the OOBE folder.
On the right hand side of the window, double-click Finished.
The Edit String window appears.Edit String
In the Value Data: box a date and time will be shown. After the time type: PM
Be sure to have a space between the last number and the PM.
Click Registry, and then click Exit.
This completes the fix for the Support.exe problem."
I only relay this in case it is of use. I can't comment and don't know how 'complete' a fix it is, eg. don't know if it leaves an erroneous settings or redundant files.
