Dell Windows 7 upgrade assistant CD/DVD will not run...

I got my Windows 7 upgrade kit... put in DISK 1, the upgrade assistant...

NOTHING. It crashes immediately and I get the VISTA "We're sorry blah blah blah close program...." message

I have rebooted, turned off and let it sit about 20 minutes retired... tried running the exe file on the disk manually using explorer... nothing it crashes every single time.

Something is either wrong with this disk or I'm going crazy. I just spent 2 and a half hours on HOLD with tech support on the phone before I just hung up tired of waiting for someone to answer the phone.

I'm hoping I'll have better luck here.

I have a 64-bit Inspiron 1750

Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1

core duo P8600

4.0 memory

This laptop is just about 2 months old and this latest failure from Dell has insured I'll not be a repeat customer. I had my previous TOSHIBA for 3 years with never a single issue with it.... This new computer blue screens for no reason at all 5-7 times a week. I'll be just checking e-mail, the only thing running is firefox when WHAM! out of the blue, BSOD (memory dump) I am so very unhappy and was hoping windows 7 would cure this random BSOD issue. Not being able to load your assistant disk? Why am I not surprised? Then to be left on IGNORE HOLD for 2.5 HOURS?

DELL = FAIL!

Anyone else having these sorts of issues and any fixes out there?

I have a DELL Studio One purchased August 2009 with Vista 64 bit. I have just received the Windows 7 Upgrade disks. On inserting the Upgrade Assistant DVD I get a windows system message saying " Dell Upgrade Assistant Has Stopped Working" .

I have explored the disk and tried to run the start.exe for the program but get the same windows system message every time.

After starting in VGA mode this morning, this is clearly not the solution, same problem...

I also restored from a previous state (15 days ago) and had a more explicit message when loading the Upgrade Assistant DVD : error code 0x1838 (6200).

This is meaning "The Task Scheduler service must be configured to run in the System account to function properly". However it occured the first time I loaded the DVD, not at the next time.

Hi,

I bought a DELL Studio 1555 in July 2009 with Vista Home premium 32 bit.

Just got my Windows 7 Upgrade disks. On inserting the Upgrade Assistant DVD I get below message......

" Unbundled exception has occurred in your application"

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this

Tried many time eject and insert the assistant disk same message appear. Decide to press Continue to ignore this but it just running many hours without any progress.

I then decide to skip this part and go straight to install OS disk, everything was fined but each time when i booted up the machine the Upgrade Asistant program will keep executed to proceed system compatibility check, when press continue the same unbundled message appear.

How do i permanently get rid of this "Upgrade Assistant program" being executed whenever i boot up the machine ?? Please HELP..

I second what danaarmstrong has said.

I've also skipped the Assistant, and I'm working completely fine - no problems with anything at all, so this seems to be the only fix for this problem we have... So I suggest it.

Thanks for help tried though, guys. It's really a shame Dell wants nothing to do with this thread at all.

I have been trying to respond to this for days and DELL keeps deleting my posts for "violations"...

Whatever.

One last try... SKIP THE ASSISTANT DISK entirely.

Just run the Windows 7 Adviser from Microsoft and REMOVE any potential conflicting or incompatible program yourself/manually.

My programs I removed was DELL CHAT (Which I never used and never would have) and POWER DVD DX another Dell added program I never utilized.

it also recommended uninstalling iTunes for the set up, (you can reinstall after the upgrade) which I did...

Then I skipped Disk One entirely, and performed the Windows 7 Upgrade and it worked.

I have reinstalled iTunes and it works fine. No issues. Just SKIP THE ASSISTANT, it's not worth the struggle and you can remove the programs manually using the Microsoft Windows Adviser tool rsmeeton gave a link to above.

I am now running Windows 7 and gave up on Dell support. There is an issue here and even the techs do not have answers for it.

Now DELL GUYS monitoring this thread but not responding to it.... there is NOTHING in violation in this post, this is helpful information and I am tired of you deleting my posts already.

I skipped the Asistant but due to earlier insertion of Assistant disk, it probably get into registry or someway..

Now that the upgrade was done but the Asistant keep executed for Server Compatibility Check. Anyway to remove this ??

I second as well, DELL provide something that is trouble making to all comsumer like us, instead of assistant it end up problematic... :(

Finally I decided to reinstall the system as originally received from DELL. So, after that, the upgrade assistant DVD worked fine, and the Windows 7 upgrade on Vista was finally made. Then, all the job made since 2 months had to be reinstalled...

Finally i found the folder where the Assistant keep executing each time i started the machine.

I unhide all folder under "Start-->Control Panel-->Folder Option".

Discover the Dell WindowUpgrade7 folder under "C:\user\ \AppData\".

Just remove that and it all run well.

I finally got Windows 7 installed on my Studio XPS 16. The upgrade assistant DVD wouldn't run at all, so I ran it straight from the Windows 7 CD. I first had to remove the Power DVD and Catalyst software, and reboot. Then you have to run Windows Setup from within Windows Vista (you can boot off the Windows 7 DVD, but you then can't do an upgrade.

Unfortunately, whilst the Windows 7 upgrade nearly completed, I got a blue screen crash when Windows 7 first started, and the whole upgrade then rolled back. I repeated the upgrade again, only to find the same happened. This time I managed to intercept the Blue Screen message, and saw that it was 0x000000ED. This relates to Windows not being able to read from the Hard Disk:

0x000000ED and 0x0000007B The SATA controller configuration in the system BIOS If the SATA controller gets toggled from ATA to AHCI mode (or vice versa), then Windows will not be able to talk to the SATA controller because the different modes require different drivers. Try toggling the SATA controller mode in the BIOS.

I checked in BIOS what mode the SATA controller was set to, and it was already set to AHCI, which is what Windows 7 needs (see separate thread)
In the end, I decided to opt for a clean installation of Windows 7 instead of an upgrade, and this worked. I then download and installed the Windows 7 versions of the software (Power DVD, BlueTooth and Video Drivers, etc) from here: https://smartsource.dell.com/web/UserForms/RegisterSystem.aspx. The Operating System DVD supplied will allow you to do a clean install, as well as an upgrade of Windows. Now its all working very well, and the performance of Windows 7 with the Studio XPS is stunning.
Despite having purchased 3 years premium support, Dell would only offer me their fee based software department  (Presto) . The contact number for Presto is: 08444443300(UK) . I rang them and they took all the details and then failed to follow up or call me back. I also attempted to contact by several other routes to alert Dell to the serious widespread nature of this problem, and the only reponses I got were automated replies.
I am an IT Professional, and it took me 3 weeks to sort this out myself, so how on earth are Dell's novice customers expected to manage? In my opinion, Dell still have a major problem with the upgrade programme that they badly need to address.  A good way would be to issue an updated recovery DVD with native Windows 7 for all customers who've experienced this.
