Dell XPX 12 shut down issue finally solved!

Question

I had posted and replied to a couple of posts regarding a issue I had, and many others were having including computers from other manufacturers, after upgrading to windows 10. After starting my system and it running for more then 2 hours, sometime most of the day and using power management, my system would not shut down correctly. Windows would, but the fans and lights stayed on. I had to manually hold the on off button for 3-5 seconds to shut the hardware down. If I used my laptop for an hour, maybe two and shut down it worked fine. Although after window shut down it took about 5-8 seconds for the fans and lights to go off.

Well after a month and two calls to Dell hours on the phone. Three calls to Microsoft , online trying posted fixes from the Intel management interface driver, to deleting Intel programs to updating drivers. I finally found the answer to the problem. Hibernation!!!It makes perfect sense to. When you leave your system for more then 2 hours it enters into a hibernation state. If you don't leave you computer on 24-7 you don't need it, you still have sleep. It should not be a problem but it is and Microsoft needs to address it. For now it will solve your issue as it did mine. There are methods on line for disabling power management under windows 10. I used command prompt (admin) and it worked. Right click on the window icon in laptop mode and choose command prompt (admin) type powercfg/h off and hit enter. Done, problem solved. It has shut down every time and also the light and fans if there on go off immediately as well. The only thing is fast start will be disabled but you'll see it is still pretty fast anyway. Hope this helps.

mine was solved with removing the 3 intel programs. but a cpl models were not fixed that way. and a few diff models were. must depends on the chip set or whatever. whatever works is what matter

Did you let you's go into hibernation. Because if not you probably still have the problem. Like I said I left mine on all day and sometimes for 3-4 hours before I used it again. So when it went into hibernation it would never shut down right. Allot of people where fooled by that. they thought it was fixed and it wasn't so make sure good luck

no, i dont use hibernation. i changed all my power setting. only let my screen turn off, except for it to go to sleep when i close the lid, nothing else. why take chances with something that could damage my motherboard or ruin my battery? i can live fine without the hibernation.. i love win 10 ...

Ok cool. But hibernation is automatic when in sleep for more than two hours. Great if your not having an issue, I also love Window 10.

tif hibernation is automatic after 2 hours, then yes i use hibernation. not uncommon for me to close the lid for a cpl hours. so that means the issue is solved.. hope it works out for you.

It didn't solve my issue. (Inspiron 7737, windows 10)

I disabled the hibernation and sleep mode from power settings.

Fan still running after shutdown. (Only occur after long time usage)

The workaround for me at the moment is to restart the laptop before shutdown......bit annoying.

Hope dell can solve this issue.

Ok I have the xps 12 laptop. Disable it using the command prompt (admin), see my post. I had first tried it in windows power management also and it  didn't work.
