Desktop destroyed
MY 2350s xp destop is destroyed software wise. I was just using the internet, checking out sports on yahoo. BOOM! the windows reloads icons, but the icons are blank, there are icons are there, but no pic. they lead no where. they either say .lnk or .exe at the end of the name. same thing with system restore. and ill do scans tonite, if i can. everytime i click an icon except internet explorer. my computer etc.... a box pop ups and says open with what program? this has happened 3 times to it. I've formatted the hardrive, but this consistent problem has become annoying. any ideas? thanks in advance

Hello ravik521 :smileyhappy:
Yes, run scans for virus. trojan and spyware
Housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Trojan Scan http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
Pest Scan http://www.pchell.com/pestscan/
The above scans are good
I think your file associations have been blitzed
Here`s a way to re-associate your files to the Windows XP defaults
http://www.dougknox.com/
Select “Win XP Fixes” on the left hand side
Select “Restore Default File Associations Easily” (right hand side)
All instructions are on the page for you

Well, you could just back up and reinstall, but I still think this is some sort of malware.
If you ran all the scans and they did not fix it, try posting a log on the HijackThis forum.

if im able to do scans, ill do it, and see what comes up. BUT, it seems like all file associations are completely gone. I've never heard of a virus like this.
