Desktop won't load! urgent help!

Please Help!

Today I tried to turn on my computer. I have a dimension 8200. It starts as usual with the sound, but once it gets to the wall paper, it stops. The desktop icons and the task bar won't show. I can access things on task manager, but if I choose my computer from task manager, it freezes. I tried to restore, didn't work. I also tried to start from the OS CD that came with the computer, it didn't do anything different, just show the wall paper and stop. I didn't do anything unusal before that, except that I installed the newest updates. Please help me to figure this out. I tried to format hard drive and reinstall, i can't even do that. Please please please help. I appreciate any response. Thank you!

banban,

If you are willing to reinstall, the instructions for that procedure are here.

try running in SAFE-MODE, and from there, Click on Start-Run and type "Msconfig" look for the start-up tab and unchecked all items there except for registry checkup. try rechecking them 1 by 1 and see if you find problem.

Thanks a lot for your replies!  I tried to reinstall, when it's copying files, it says symc8xx.sys is corrupted, if i keep going, it says system.ini is corrupted, and it doesn't move forward anymore. So I can't even reinstall. I also tried to use Msconfig, after i uncheck the items and restart it, it became the same before I uncheck those. After the wall paper load, if I try to turn off the computer, it aways says explore.exe is not responding. I always have to mannually turn it off. I don't know what to do any more......any ideas? Any suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks to all!

banban,

Are you certain that you changed the boot order in BIOS to make the CD-ROM the first boot device? The error message you are receiving indicates that files on the hard disk are being accessed.

try reformatting your hardisk after booting from a floppy or CD, be sure to back up any important files that you may have. and also try using a different MS Windows CD. it would take hours but it might solve the problem.

what happens if you from the task manager go file> new task> then type explorer.exe and hit enter???. That may resolve the icons and taskbar problem temporarily.
