Dimension 4400 won't boot up after SP-2 install
I know this is a problem experienced by many, but I have not seen a specific resolution to my situation. After installing SP-2, I now get the dreaded blue screen with the following error message:
STOP: c0000135 {Unable To Locate Component}
This application has failed to start because winsrv was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

Can get to safe mode, but that doesn't help. All the info I see on MS support says to use the XP CD to get in and uninstall SP-2. But when I try that, it doesn't boot up off the CD. Further MS support says to change the BIOS to set the CD-ROM as the first priority boot device. Directs me to Dell to find out how to do that. I have a Dimension 4400.
Any suggestions

If you can access Safe Mode can you not un-install SP2 thru Add/Remove ?

Sorry, what I meant to say was that I could get to the safe mode menu by pressing F8 during startup. Thne when I try safe mode, it reverts to blue screen.
Thanks for the BIOS info. I'll give it a shot.

Hey, thanks for following up!
I tried going into the BIOS and changing the boot sequence, but for some reason it does not boot off the CD. I went to the 'boot' menu, selected 'boot priority', and then 'atapi CD-ROM drive'. Once I selected the CD drive, I followed the menu instructions and hit F10 to save and exit. The PC then starts to boot up, show the Dell screen, then the Windows screen, and then goes black and after a few seconds to the same old blue error screen. I can see the CD drive light up a few times during this process, but nothing after that.
When I go back into BIOS and look at the settings, it still has the old sequence listed, so I'm thinking that it's not accepting my change for some reason.
Any suggestions?
On the TV Media issue, I don't know for sure that this applies, but I suspect that it very well may, since it's my daughter's PC and it often is overrun with spy/adware.
Again, thanks for the help. Any light you can shed is greatly appreciated!

Were you able to get into your BIOS and change the 'boot setting' ? Try F2 if the 4300 directions doesn't work.
Once you get to the cd use the Recovery Console option to uninstall SP2. Let us know how you make out.

PS Does this TV Media program apply to you ? I suggest you run the qfecheck program to make sure the update 885523 is properly installed on your machine; uninstall Sp2 first and then run qfecheck.

Here's an update:
I finally was able to boot up off the XP CD and use recivery console. Uninstalled SP2 as per MS instructions and with a Dell tech on the phone. All seemed to be well on the way to resolution, BUT...
Once I had uninstalled SP2, I tried booting up again, and ran into trouble. The problem is that none of my user names seem to be recognized. I tried one that requires a p/w, and 3 that don't, but all are rejected, resulting in the 'make sure your user name and p/w are correct' message.
The Dell tech simply said that the only option now was to reinstall the OS. Obviously, I'd like to avoid that. Any suggestions?

It's possible that there is a chance to avoid it but I'm not the one that can lead you thru it; you need Denny Denham. I can get you started by giving you MS's answer page on this but that's as far as I can go. The other 2 options that may be effective are a Repair Install, (but I don't see this as having a legitimate chance AND some other procedure Denny has mentioned in the past about getting aroung the Password Prompt involving Ctrl/Alt/Del 2x; my memory is fuzzy. If a re-install is not a good option for you I'd re-post your problem quoting this thread (by copying/pasting the thread URL into the New Message).
Denny, Please Help as the Message Subject may catch his eye. Here's the MS link; it's unlikely you installed the Recovery Console prior to SP2 install so choose Method 2 to install it IF you are able to use the MS 'boot' disks.

Unfortunately, my original problem was finally solved only by a full reintsall of XP. I was able to back up my hard drive to another PC, so no major loss for me. I would suggest checking out Microsoft support web database, as they have a lot of very detailed info on SP2 problems like this. There seemed to be some hope for a possible fix by uninstalling SP2 by using your XP install CD, but that eventually didn't work out for me. For you, who knows...
