On the above system I get the blue screen whether I try to boot through normal way or startup in Safe Mode. Do I have any other aternative but to complete system recovery.

I appreciate the response. The error code was:
STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x823697A8, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)
The verbal part talks about unloading virus scanner which is Norton in this case.

Run a chkdsk on the drive as explained here
http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=5097
if the PC boots after doing this, defragment the hard drive.
