Dimension 8400 Clean Install Problem

Greetings,

I am trying to to a clean install of XP Pro SP2 on a Dimension 8400. The OS installed properly. However, none of the Dell-provided drivers will install. Trying to run the driver installation results in a momentary flash of a command prompt box and nothing else.

When doing a "run as" for the driver, I get a message to the effect of "a temporary file needed for installation could not be created or could not be written to"

I am logged in as administrator.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

Do you have antiviral software running which might prevent them from installing?

Make sure you're installing the drivers in the correct order:

  1. Desktop System Software (System Utilities)
  2. Chipset driver
  3. Video driver
  4. Audio driver
  5. Network driver
  6. Modem driver
  7. Other drivers

If you don't install drivers in the order listed, they may not install and/or may not work properly after installation.

EDIT: Some (most) of the driver .exe files that you download from the Dell Support site or copy from your Dell Resources CD only expand the driver files in a new folder on the hard drive when you click on the downloaded .exe. You have to migrate to the new folder with the same name (eg, folder R123456) created for each of the expanded driver files and double-click its setup.exe file to install that driver. Always better to download the drivers because they're likely to be newer versions than on the CD.

And install in the order listed above, so it might be good idea to keep track of driver file names so you know which one is which because a file named "R123456.exe" isn't very informative.

Hi

I would suggest you to install drivers from the below mentioned link:

http://dell.to/NKEl6p

In case you are using a different system, would suggest you to save the drivers on USB flash drive and then try to install on the dimension 8400 desktop.

In case issue still persists, would request you to provide the system’s Service Tag and contact information so I may access your system records. I am sending  you a private message.

Please reply if you have any further questions.

Thanks & Regards
