Downloading Files from External Hard Drive

I have a Maxtor External Hard Drive that I'm backing up my files etc. from my Dimension 2400 to a new Dimension E521 with the Vista Home Premium Edition. My Maxtor is the Onetouch III model, so I guess it takes one touch to download my files to the new computor. Will the Vista have a problem with me restoring my material from the Maxtor?

I am not familiar with the Maxtor.

However, why are you not using Vista's Windoes Easy Transfer?  It's built in and very easy to use.  It can even transfer all your settings over from the old to new computer.  and for those files that are only on the Maxtor and not on your old computer anymore, use the Maxtor's own software to restore your fles onto the new computer.

Hi MoneyGuyBK,  I don't have my new computor with the Windows MS Vista yet.  I wasn't aware that it had the program to transfer all my old files from my old computor to it. So what you are saying is I won't have to use my external hard drive to save and transfer my files from my old computor?  The Vista has a program to do that?

You can certainly use the Easy Transfer utility. For some it works fine, but others have reported several problems. Your solution (backing up to the external drive) will work as well. When you are ready to transfer your data from the Maxtor to the new computer, simply plug in the USB cable and then turn on the drive. Vista should recognize it immediately (at least it did with mine). You don't need the "One Touch" software.

Thanks, that's good to know.  Dell hasn't sent my new PC out yet so I'll keep this in mind.

hi Patty Ann

Yes you can use the Vista easy transfer to move all your files, settings and more.  It works great.  Of course I would still back up your files if I were you.  that is in case anything goes wrong, including a lightning strike and power outages in the middle of the transfer :smileywink:
