Driver for 'PCI Device' on Inspiron 1300
I've recently had to reinstall Windows XP on my Inspiron 1300 after a kindly MF infected the system with a bot! However, I didn't back up my drivers. I have retrieved all with the exception of that described as for PCI Device. It's the only one in the device manager with a yellow question mark beside it. Can anyone please enlighten me (a) on where to download it and (b) what its filename is?
Best thanks

Can you enlighten us on what this PCI device may be?
Obviously it is one of your expansion cards which is plugged into your PCI expansion slot. So, which card is not functioning?

Ah! The simple answer is no! In device manager, there is a yellow question mark beside which is 'PCI device'!! I was hoping that someone else might know as I haven't a clue as to what it might be!! And it is listed as of 'unknown manufacturer', ditto the driver. Further, I haven't a clue how to find out as I don't wish to trash the laptop by my ham-handed use of a screwdriver!! Aren't computers and their manufacturers teasing little rascals?

You could try by elimination, i.e. check what components are shown as OK compare with components you have in your laptop. Is anything on your laptop not functioning as it should? That could also point to the missing one.
All the available drivers for Inspiron 1300 are here:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSPIRON1300/B130&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
Did you install the chipset drivers (should be first install after OS)?

EDIT: JR's answer is better, but I'll throw this in anyhow.
Could it be integrated audio? I would think that would show up as a bang under Sounds, but it might be waiting for the Microsoft UAA HD Audio driver (usually included with the audio driver package) to be loaded up under System.

It is indeed the sound card, complicted by the fact that ignorance led me not to follow the correct order of installation of the drivers I could find! Thank you for your help, but please don't go away!!

Thank you so much for that. It was the audio that was awol and now ahs returned to the fold. One thing, all seems to be working fine, but I had not installed the chipset first. Will it be necessary to do a reinstall and follow the order you described? Or does the fact that the beast is doing what it is supposed to do a sign that all is well?

Here's my not-very-technical user understanding of it - somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.
Chipset driver isn't really a driver, it's an identifier - a road map to the chipset (diagram HERE for the 910GML, which I think is the one for your Inspiron). If XP and/or the drivers you installed can figure out how all your devices are supposed to communicate with the chipset then you should be fine. Lots of good gory details here:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/index.htm
If you do want to install it now, you might want to try it in safe mode - less chance of the drivers you've already installed loading up and possibly interfering with the chipset information.

Again, best thanks for your help. I've taken a copy of your notes to a safe place!! But as all seems to be working fine, I'll quit while ahead! However, if things start to misbehave, then at least I now know how to handle them.
