You may have overlooked the opportunity for cleanliness that is presented shortly after booting to the Windows XP CD, by first deleting and then re-creating and formatting the partition before continuing with the installation.
Have you gone to msconfig > Boot ini > check boot paths and see if one is incorrect or invalid? If one is I believe you can delete the invalid one and this shoud remedy your issue.
