You either are infected by spyware or you have used a spyware removal tool that only removed part of a nasty piece of spyware.  Download, install, update, and run Ad-Aware and Spybot and let these programs remove all of the garbage that they find.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com Ad-Aware

http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download Spybot

If these programs don't solve the problem, go to the following site and follow the directions to download and run the analysis tool called HijackThis.

http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/

Generate a log file, then open it and copy and paste the text of the log file in a message in one of the following forums:

http://subratam.org/
http://www.zerosrealm.com/forums/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

where a certified HijackThis expert can offer advice on how to fix the problem:

I updated and ran spybot (I already had it on my computer)  and got rid of a number of files.

Then I ran virus scan (McAfee) and it came up with a 12 "potentially unwanted programs".   All had the name "Adware-something)

Can I assume that this is entirely different than Ad-Aware?

Adware is more or less a synonym for spyware as used by McAfee.  Ad-Aware is  legitimate program that removes spyware and adware.

Steve,

I tried to post my HijackThis log to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/.  I got all the text in but could never find a submit/send/post button.  There was a preview button but even there - there seemed to be no button to send.  Should I assume it got there or try one of the other sites you recommended?

joedonahue,

Steve doesn't seem to be around today, so here are a few thoughts from me. :-)

I'm not registered at BleepingComputer, so I couldn't check out the problem you're having. I wonder if that forum reqires Javascript to be enabled, and it's not enabled in your browser. Can you post in any of the boards there, such as the "Test and Scribbles" board?

If nothing's working for you at BleepingComputer, I'd suggest trying another one of the forums in Steve's list.

Another possibility...

Grinler, the "Head Bleeper" and administrator of BleepingComputer, is analyzing some HijackThis logs in the local Virus/Spyware board. You might want to post there with "Attention Grinler" in the subject. Wherever you decide to post, be sure to explain the problem you're experiencing.

I ran spybot and it did not fix my problem.

I ran hijack this and can't seem to find any place to post the log.  I tried bleeping computer but after I pasted in the log I could not find a post/submit/send button.  Not even on the preview screen.

Someone suggested I post it at a different forum but I was criticized for not posting it on this forum and was told to download and run a different program.

This morning I tried posting to http://subratam.org/
I couldn't find an appropriate forum to post it in.

Please - All I need is a fairly specific place to post the hijackthis log.  If that doesn't work, I'm willing to try a new direction.

There are knowledgeable people here but you have to register.

You'll notice the sticky "Hijack This steps before you post"
Read that. Then see if you can post there.

You don't have to watch G4techtv to join.

I used to watch techtv, but it went to the dogs when comcast bought it, in my opinion.

joedonahue,

Regarding Subratam.org...here's a direct link to the HijackThis log posting area.

It can be reached from the site's main screen by clicking on the "Forums" icon at the upper right, and then clicking on the link entitled "HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal" in the Security section.

I think I found out why I had a problem before.  There is a button at the bottom that says "Post new topic".  I assumed that button was asking me for another topic.  Maybe it should be renamed "Submit Post".

Thanks for the help.  I will be patient.  I have been living with this problem for a while now.
