Excessive pop ups in Xp especially at night
I am getting excessive pop ups in XP Home edition when IE is open at night. I have all of my pop up controls on, also have raised the firewall security level to "lock down tight connection". what else can I do to stop these pop ups?

I recommend that you download/install/purchase LavaSoft's Ad-Aware6 Plus or Pro. Also install the Lavasoft plug-in that allows you to deactivate Messenger which is a common culprit for pop-ups. Messenger is not needed by most home computer users. There is a free version of Ad-Aware6; however, it does not include a key feature which is Ad-Watch.
Ad-Aware can be found at www.lavasoftusa.com.

It's probably the Messenger Service. You can disable it with this script:

For added protection, you can also use these (free) programs:
Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbgettingstarted.html
And, for extra paranoia protection,
SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=spybotsd

I wouldn't pay for any of it. Get the free version of Ad-Aware and also the free version of Spybot-Search and destroy. Keep them both updated and run them often and you'll be fine. Spybot has the immunization feature included for free that you'd have to pay for in Ad-Aware. Good luck!
