exe download
I'm going nuts with this. I cannot download executable application files. I can download anything else including executable zip files.
I have checked all the security settings, uninstalled patches and security updates, pop up stoppers, anti virus and firewalls. I checked with Microsoft's 'Knowledge' base. Zip.
What makes it even more infuriating is that an XP PC on the same network has no problems.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

What error messages are reported when you try to download such files?

The window with the red circle and white cross pops up with the following message
Internet Explorer cannot download ******.exe from www.**********.com
Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.
I know it's not the site because it happens every time I try to download an executable from any site.

Summary: If a plugin has been installed that's supposed to handle extension ".exe", downloads will fail in the way you described. Quicktime's a possible culprit.
There are quite a few others. Search Google groups using the search expression above if that one isn't the problem. And given what you've already tried, it's not surprising that the solution will be an obscure one!

Jim,
Thanks for your efforts but I'd already tried this one, along with some of the equally obscure ones. I think the time has come to admit defeat - even the combined intellect (!) of Microsoft support cannot come up with a solution. A weekend of re-formatting and re-installing looms.
Regards,

Sigh...It's *got* to be something like that - the trick is finding it!

I had to reply to this thread about how I could not download exe files.
Everytime I clicked on a .exe file the page would go blank with a little icon in the left top corner.
After days of trying to find a solution without reformating my computer I finally found the problem.
Here it was Quicktime player that messed it up.
So I deleted the older Quicktime player I had installed and reinstalled a new version.
And now it works I can download exe files again.
More info can be found here. This page gave me the idea what to look for.
