Failed instal of Dell Support version 3

Hi, I have just tried to downleoad and install the newest version of Dell Support over a broadband connection. It seems to download ok, and I proceed to instal but it tells me in the middle of this that "Failed to extract file Newbinary 20 from binary table". The installation is thus aborted. I've tried disabling my firewall to see if that makes a difference bu the same thing happens.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Consider yourself lucky.  Dell Support is a useless program, most people uninstall it.  Use Search and you can see the posts from people who did that.

Oh!!

I scanned through the various threads: do I take it that I shouldn't bother to upgrade anything (other than windows etc) unless there appears to be a problem?

I have had trouble with my AOL modem: BT Voyager 105. It crashes my computer to a blue screen and the microsoft error reports tell me that the ADSL USB Modem (glausb.sys) is at fault. I have followed advice from an AOL message board and unticked nearly everything from my start up section of msconfig. So far so good, but I thought that upgrading the USB driver may be the thing to do? What do you reckon?

AOL refuse to replace the modem, saying that my pc must have a "conflict". I have re-installed the modem software more times than I care to say.

Anyway, only time will tell if I have managed to sort the issue out, but what do you guys think about upgrades from Dell?

Your first sentence is correct mostly.  Update Windows Critical Updates, update antivirus and firewall software, and of course MS Office.  Otherwise leave things alone.

USB driver wouldn't be the reason for your modem to crash.  If it sees it, usb is fine.

To properly cleanup MSCONFIG, use this link: Start, Run, Msconfig. Click on Startup Tab. Uncheck everything that this site says you can: www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php. When the computer reboots, check the box that says don't show me this again. If it's X or N, uncheck it.
