About a week ago.  I tried system restore, but it did not help.  I haven't tried msconfig.  What does msconfig do? How do I i run msconfig?

Hi,

Click Start-> Run->Type "msconfig" without quotes and press "Enter". You will get System Configuration Utility. Click the LAST tab "Startup" and click "Disable All" at lower right hand corner. Then click the tab "Services". Check "Hide all Microsoft Services" and then click "Disable All". Finally click "Apply" and then "Close". Restart PC. On Startup you will get a notification window that you have used system config utility. Check the box and click "Ok". Now turn off PC to see if you get the error screen again.
1) If this resolves the issue, then perform msconfig once again and this time start putting back the check marks in "Startup" and "Services" until you locate the culprit thats causing the error. Keep that unchecked and enable everything else.
2) If this does not resolve the issue, then perform msconfig again and this time click "Enable All" for both "Startup" and "Services".

IMPORTANT:- When you perform msconfig, do not connect to the Internet; if you have a hi speed connection turn off the external modem since this particular step will disable the antivirus.

... and if by chance you have uninstalled QuickTime, re-install it and disable it from starting (if desired) using Fixit_Sam's msconfig tip.
