FILE AND SETTINGS TRANSFER WIZARD - RESTORE FROM EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
Unfortunately I used the Dell instructions for transferring data files before doing a system restore on my Dell Dimension 8400 with XP Media. It did not say that an external hard drive would not work on the restore end. As a result, I know have 159gb of data on my external hard drive and I can't restore it to my Dell. I get the infamous error message saying it can't find the file. I do have the correct files on the external drive. Is my only option, now, to copy the files to another PC with enough space, so that FAST will recognize it, and copy it back to my Dell? Obviously, I can't copy that much data to a DVD or CD.

According to the Microsoft site you can Transfer files to a external harddrive.

Yes, I know that! However, when I tried it the first 4 times I got the error message saying that the file was not there, even though it was. Then I tried a suggestion that someone made of browsing only as far as the root directory of the hard drive. The utility did find the correct folder. However, after quite some time of "Gathering Files" it said "Finished", even though it had not copied anything back to my PC. So, I am still at a loss as to what to do. I am considering taking my external hard drive out of the case and installing it in my PC. The utility should work then.

I found my own solution! I installed a new drive in my pc. I copied the file from my external drive to the new internal drive. (a second drive). I was then able to copy the "Transferred" files back on to my default drive successfully. The answer was the data must be on a drive in a PC.
