Flashing Black Screen

My screen flashes black every now and then and I am wondering if there is something damaged or if I need to tune-up something?

Thanks

I'm not really sure. Maybe you can give us some more information:

Have you tried doing a virus/trojan scan lately to see if something is doing a full-screen pop-up/under? Have you ruled out a monitor or video cabling problem? Does any movement of vibration cause the problem? Is something trying to change the current resolution, 'degauss' or reset the monitor?

Mike,

Thank you for taking time to answer my question,

I have tried a virus scan and nothing comes up.  All of the cable connections are in place and tight.

The flash takes place randomly  and last for a quick 2-5 seconds and back to screen.

I've seen that before when the monitor is reset to change display frequencies, but never by itself. I'm almost inclined to believe that it's a monitor problem. It seems like the monitor is resetting itself for some reason; a component failing when heated, or losing vertical sync for example. I'd see if someone has a monitor that you can borrow, swap them out, and see if the problem clears up. If it doesn't, i'd look to the graphics card next. If it was something as large as an intermittent PCI/AGP bus failure, i don't think the system would 'choke'.
