format inspiron 4000

I have an inspiron 4000 that has windows 2000 on it.  I want to format the hard drive and install windows ME which was originally on it.    I have only a cdrom/dvd - no floppy drive. I tried to type format c: at the dos prompt it says wrong version of Dos .

2 thoughts:

1.  how bout running the WIN2k CD:  I believe there is a format with that (not positive)

2.  what about the original restore/recovery CD that came with the PC, wouldn't that restore it to WIN Me

I don't like to assume anything so please don't be insulted if I mention basic things that may appear obvious.

since this machine was recieved second hand, I would download & back up to CD (if possible) all necessary drivers for the devices on this PC.

My best experience & knowledge is with WIN98 as far as reformating & reinstalling so I would be looking to get my hands on a WIN98 boot disk then run format & FDISK from that, but that appears to be out of the question.  I have used my WIN98 boot disk to format WIN98, WIN2K, WIN XP but I had a floppy drive

My next attempt would be to run the WIN Me CD to see what that has to say,  it may just tell you that it will have to format do you want to continue?

I really don't believe the restore CD will work since I think that it is configure for one specific machine but someone else may have better knowledge on that.

This has me interested to find out the outcome so if you have success with something please post & in the meantime I'll attempt to find out other options.
