Formatting the PC
Hey
I'd like to wipe my PC completely clean, but how do I do that? I tried right-clicking on the HD and clicking format, but that failed. I tried reinstalling windows, but my CD is scratched and the installation won't finish (by the way, can I request a replacement windows disc from Dell?). The idea is that I move all important files onto a hard drive which I remove from the PC and then format everything else. So are there any other methods of doing this?
In case you're wondering why I wanna format it, here's why: It isn't running nearly as well as it did a while ago. I used to be able to play GTA San Andreas on high graphics without any lag, but now even playing it on low gives lag. I tried turning off all processes not necessary, and even turned off all internet connections, but to no avail. I want to be able to play games and run programs quickly again.
And one more thing - does reinstalling windows actually wipe the PC blank? What does it keep on the PC?
Thanks, please reply as soon as possible.

Contact Dell at one of the links in this post and request an XP reinstallation CD. Since you have already received a CD (which is scratched and apparently cannot be used) they may not agree to provide one, but it doesn't hurt t ask.
The procedure for installing XP (which includes formatting) is here and in the included links. Formatting wipes the partition blank for all intents and purposes (there is still information there but the pointers to it have been removed so it is not readily accessible).

Yes, the system will be precisely as it was when you received it.

So yeah, thanks for the help.
EDIT: OK I got a big problem. I used the Dell PC Restore by Symantec tool. It worked, but now the PC won't boot. After the windows loading screen, it's just black, nothing happens. I think this may be due to the new graphics card I installed a while back. Perhaps the PC can't recognize it anymore. I tried plugging the monitor into the old Intel monitor slot, but then the monitor doesn't work at all. I tried booting the PC from all of the options in the start up menu, but the same thing happens with each.
Anyone know what to do? I need to get the PC working ASAP.

I thought I'd add that I can now play The Godfather on 1024x768 without lag, and before the formatting, it lagged every five seconds on the lowest settings. This is great.

When doing a DELL PC Restore, you must have the machine in an as-delivered state. Remove all hardware you added, unplug all USB connections except the keyboard & mouse. Then redo the RESTORE.
Only after this can you add new hardware.
It is really the only way to be safe.
