Fun with photography software.......

I am looking for some free software so that I can make fun pictures(i.e. putting your head on someone else's body, etc.) I have looked up several, but don't know what is safe and what is just regular photo processing software. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Photoshop is about as far as you can get from "Free".  Picassa is a nice, free, photo editor that may meet your needs.

Dave, I have to admit that PhotoShop users are die-hards.  Once you're hooked, it's the only photo-editing software that you'll consider.  I'm sure aM's response is because they, like me, are so used to PhotoShop that nothing else compares.

Looked at the reviews for Picasa on the CNet site here.  Some were raves, some were outright boos.  Depends on your level of expertise and what you want to use the software for.  It's safe to say that the original request to flip heads from one person to another does take a little more expertise than the average novice.  I've done it, so I know it's not this seemless issue of "cut and paste."

Thanks for informing us about Picasa, though.  I'd never heard of it, but it does seem to have its merits.  And, anything for free is worth a try.  I'm a teacher, so my copy of PhotoShop was a fraction of the original cost (I teach the software).  But I'm hooked on it, and my students have become addicts, too.  Some of them can afford PhotoShop, and some cannot.  This gives them an alternative.  Appreciate the clue :)

You might want to consider paint.net too. It was a started as a student project at Washington State U to improve Microsoft's Paint program. MS provided source code and assistance which led to paint.net.

It's free to download and has lots of the feature you pay for in advanced photo software. The latest version was released just last week. Here's their homepage:
