Goback-like program and Windows XP Home (SP 2)
Hi -
I had purchased Goback 4 after reading that it was compatible with Win XP Home. Well, I got a Stop Code message and had to return it. I used it with Windows 98 and found it a wonderful product.
Does anyone know of a similar product - where it 'does its thing' on drive, C; I know this is frowned upon, but I never had a problem using such a program with Win 98. I do not want to have to use a CD drive or to partition my hard disk.
Thank you so much.
Thanks

Windows XP has a utility called System Restore that does exactly what you are trying to do. You can read more details on how to use it here:

System restore only restores system files, etc. GoBack restores the HD exactly the way it was at a selected time, including media files, and documents. And you can recover files that were lost in the revert.
I would suggest a backup program, like Norton Ghost (I have that too) if you have second Hard Drive. You could also back up using CD's or DVD's, but would take many CD's.

Ok, so I've learned two things. GoBack does a lot more than System Restore.
And boppo thinks that kissing his sister is ok, although it doesn't do anything for him most of the time.

Thanks for your info. I had been told that Goback 3 could NOT be used on Win XP.
I had tried to install it on Win XP, to no avail. Even tried Compatibility option. No good.
What did you do to get it to work? I certainly don't want another Stop Error code.
Thanks for your input.

If your pc ever dies and you need to salvage data from the drive with GoBack installed . . you will rue the day you installed it . . it will be locked tighter than a jug and data will not be salvageable . . ask me how I know. . .

I had it since 2002, and I also have it installed on my Laptop.
Sometimes, background running programs will interfere. So you should disable all items in the System tray during install. (Anti-virus, too, as long as you are not connected to the internet)
Just in case I lose my data, I have all of my files backed up to CD's.
Thanks

Msil217 -
Again my thanks for your reply. As I said, my system crashed when I installed Goback 4. I have heard that there is a "known" conflict between GoBack and Win XP, but neither Dell nor symantec take responsibiity.
I'm trolling the Net for a similar program, but all seem to involve imaging and use of other drives. I found GoBack's using the C drive just fine, dandy, uncomplicated and great.
'Til next time...

I've used Goback since Adaptec's version "2.2". I have also installed "Roxio's GoBack 3 Deluxe" on a couple of WinXP Home versions and a WinXP Pro version (also on Win2000 and WinME notebooks).
The installation from the CD, with "GoBack 3 Deluxe", on my sister's "WinXP Home SP1" Sony notebook (newly purchased, at the time) didn't work right (her husband installed SP2 the next day)... but it did work in a limited capacity (keeps history for only 1-2 days or less... with "very little" HDD activity). I later became aware of an update for Goback 3 Deluxe on Symantec's website, but I haven't gotten around to updating her notebook, yet.
I have also used GoBack (3.2 update) with System Restore "not installed", while fooling around for a few weeks with slipped-streamed modified SP2 CD versions of WinXP Home (originally SP1) and WinXP Pro (originally SP1) installed on a spare HDD. I removed "System Restore", Background Intelligence (required for Windows Update), IE Browser (required for Windows Update), Security Center (used ZoneAlarm 4.5, instead) and some other things from the installation list, with "nLite", and these modified versions with GoBack are faster (no lag - instant response) than with what WinXP SP2 usually installs.
I haven't had any problems with the other installs (WinXP updated to SP2) of Goback Deluxe update version 3.21.106 ("click here"), yet. This update is a complete install of GoBack.
You could try to see if this "Update version" (use your "GoBack 3 Deluxe CD" as validation) will work for you, also.
("During the installation, you will be prompted to insert your GoBack CD".)
Before the installs of this update, I disabled WinXP's "System Restore" ("click here") and seem to recall checking "Start/ Run/ type services.msc" to make sure it was "stopped/disabled".
Defrag the HDD.
You also might want to do a "Complete Clean Boot" to ensure the background programs are closed ("click here").
Then double-click the downloaded update file and install GoBack.
I also found a Dell Forum discussion on Norton GoBack 4, "here" and another discussion "here". Apparently, there is an update (GoBack ver. 4.02.309) that might correct the stop-error, but you can only get it through "Live Update" after installation.
Aloha,
Rod
