HDMI Audio after update to Windows 8 on E6420 (solved)
I have recently upgraded my Dell E6420 from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (64 bit).
The main problem I encountered was that the HDMI output stopped supporting audio which meant goodbye to 5.1 music and movies.
I thought it might be useful to share the solution here as I wasn't able to find it anywhere.
Using old Win7 nVidia driver from Dell website proved to make things worse as screen was blank after reboot and plugging in HDMI showed login screen on external display but blue screen of death on laptop screen :/
What worked for me was this:
1) Install Windows 8 64-bit driver for NVS 4200M from nVidia website. After restart video should be fine, but audio not yet as it's not installed as part of installer for some reason.
2) Plug in HDMI
3) Go to sound in control panel. HDMI sound input should be visible, but "not plugged in" as it uses Microsoft driver as this point
4) Open properties for the HDMI and "update driver" selecting HDMI audio folder that was unpacked as part of nVidia installation package, for me it was in c:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\310.70\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International\HDAudio
I had to do it again after restart as it reverted to default Microsoft driver after booting up with HDMI plugged in but after that it works perfectly :)

What do you do for windows 8 -32 bit? on Dell Inspiron N4050 Intel core i-5 version 2

This still works as 8-10-2020. In MY CASE, running Windows 8.0 Pro, I had to
1) right click on "speaker"
2) Left click "playback devices""
3) Left click on "Nvidia Output High Definition Audio to select (it highlights blue)
4) Right click...a window opens...go down and LEFT click "properties"
5) Under "controller information"....LEFT click on "properties"
6) Do NOT CLICK on the DRIVER TAB here...but at the bottom LEFT click "change settings"
7) NOW LEFT CLICK ON THE "driver" TAB...at this point the "update driver is no longer greyed out!
LEFT click on "browse my computer" and navigate to FOLDER were your driver installation files are
9) Select/Highlight folder and then LEFT click NEXT!
At this point windows saw the installation files and loaded the driver...I didn't even have to restart for
the sound to come across HDMI cable...I was able to hear sound immediately on TV via the HDMI.

(dell E6420) running Windows 8.0 Pro was a good buy at $55 8gb Ram, 120GB SSD, battery and A/C
Adapter...won cheap bid with free shipping on a holiday when ppl are distracted! Saw the nVidia card
and knew I would have problems with something. Never thought it would be an aggravating audio
problem! Just couldn't hear audio on 55" TV...now I can! Thanks again "ADAM"
