Help with Boot.ini file for a RAID 1 (Mirror) config.
My computer was infected by the Antivirus Pro System and Antivirus XP viruses (bogus antivirus software). I thought I got rid of them but a couple of weeks ago my mouse and keyboard (both USB, nothing else available) stopped working, though I did get the log in screen. After much research and component removal/swapping/resetting the bios, I decided to install a PCI USB card and it worked.
Alas, within a couple of days, the first boot up screen (after the Dell screen) said "keyboard error" and the next screen said "Loading PBR for descriptor....2" followed by the next screen "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\Config\System. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original set up CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"
So it appears the Bios has been hijacked because my keyboard is Ok, (swapped it onto my other older Dell Dimension 8300) and so is the mouse. None of the USB ports work (motherboard and PCI card). I even bought a combo PCI express USB/1394 card and it did not work.
I am trying to create a Windows XP boot diskette (yes, for some reason I had a floppy drive configured!!) following the Microsoft KB article " How to create a bootable floppy disk for an NTFS or FAT partition in Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305595.
I need to know what to put in the Boot .ini file, i.e. those zeros in parenthesis. I only have one partition and one OS, so I understand the (1) for the partition. But what about the the multi, disk, rdisk numbers? As I said earlier, my 2 drives are in RAID 1 (mirror) configuration.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
Default= multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
I am hoping that this bootable disk will clear the Keyboard failure and will allow me to access the bios to change the boot order to CD first. Then I can create and run a WIndows Set Up CD to repair the OS..
Thank you for your help.
