I would like to know first of all what items listed at startup in msconfig can be eliminated and then activated on a as need basis. On my previous system a P3 I found by removing all of the items thru the Sysytem Configuration Utility that have a check mark in the box to run at startup my system ran much better and faster .I have the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 ,and when I open MSCONFIG and click on te startup tab ,I cannot beliee how many items are enabled to load at startup ,now perhaps on WinXP this is not a concern and does not effect the performance I dont know becasue this is my first exprience with WinXP ? Can someone please help me out ,I also want to delete all of the preloaded stuff I wont be buying the full version of I also dont use AOL and I've read as many as 1,000 entries are in your regisry related to AOL .I did request when ordering this system that they not install all of the bloaatware and sent me a fairly clean install of the O/S however I recieved the PC with all of the preloaded apps anyway. The software I will be using like Encarta 2006 and Microsofts Office Suite ,I will probably leave on the CD instead of installing the full version on the H.D. this way I can save H.D. space for other thtings ? Well Thank You in Adavance

Most can be turned off.  Be sure to leave active anything to do with your anti-virus, firewall and spyware software.  Running a Google search of each listed item is a good way to determine what can stay and what must go.

Gumba,  XP seems to handle much more in the way of startup then previous operating systems. You can select some things not to run at startup through msconfig.  If you do a google search for startup items you can find several sources of lists that will aid in identifying the various programs. Also to uninstall a lot of the extras that came on you Dell you can use this program found here. I have used this on several new Dells and it has worked well and allows you to check what you want removed.
