HELP.Just Installed SP2. SLOW boot up. Cant get into control panel. Windows explorer has encountered a problem.....
Hi,
I installed sp2. I have a slow boot up and i cannot get into the control panel sometimes, often when i do this message appears "Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" and it closes. I have tried reinstalling windows twice, cleaned the registry, deleted programs, scanned with norton antivirus(no viruses). The Guest account crashes when trying to log on. I have a Dell Dimension 8300. Also the device manager is telling me I have two 3.2Ghz cpu processors. It is not possible to roll back the drivers for the cpu.
Has anyone had this problem? or know the solution

This is the siganture error it comes up with after opening the control panel.

Go to Add/Remove and uninstall SP2, reboot, and reinstall it. You have the wrong version of the file ntdll.dll running. Prepare your machine before you reinstall SP2; prepare your system for Sp2 by cleaning out your IE cache, do a disk cleanup, chkdsk, and defrag, run an online AV scan at housecall.trendmicro.com, run updated scans of AdAware and Spybot, run Belarc and MS's qfecheck, limit your running programs using msconfig and go offline before you install SP2. Also disconnect all unnecessary peripherals before starting.
If the reinstall doesn't help possibly extracting the proper file to your System32 folder (using the msconfig/"Expand file") commands may help. Post back after the reinstall if you still have problems.

It may have not installed, at least not properly.
1. I'd do a quick search on the computer for a file called spuninst.exe. The one you want should have the size 167 kb (or 166). If you do find it (it may be hidden) double-click (and reboot).
2. I don't think you will find it even if it is unhid cause I don't think it (the SP2) installed. Therefore, shut down all running programs and run a System Restore to (the day) prior to the install if possible.
3. You can check if it was installed properly by using this MS utility.

The windows website is telling me sp2 is installed. The security center is not in the control panel, however is under accesories/system tools. The security center is saying that it is unavailable because the "security center" service has not started or was stoppped. Is there anyway to unistall withouth the spuninst.exe. I tried folowing the windows websites advice using the command prompt to remove it but it does not recoginise the files.

First let me apologize. There would be no restore points in days prior to SP2 install. I'll give you the link for uninstalling SP2; try them in order as it states.
I would get all your services running before you do anything. (NB: Reboot after you have configured them to the 'default' settings.) To get to services, at Start/Run type in:
services.msc
(and hit "OK"). Compare each one to Viper's (I'll give you his Services page) default setting for each. For each one that needs to be changed , right-click on it, select Properties, and make the change. For those services where the default is "Automatic" remember to start the service before you move down the list to the next service. When finished all the services, reboot and see how things work. Use the msconfig command to verify all Services are checked and Running if applicable to that service. If no good try the uninstall procedures and then if accomplished we can try to work from there. I would start backing up your important data, docs, email, etc. ASAP before you make any further changes.
