Hover causes "mouse click"
Inspiron 5100, XP, SP2
If pointer is left over a clickable area (any clickable area, including text), it clicks in that area after a few seconds of inactivity (not moving mouse). I can't get it to stop. There is no "hover" option under Mouse in the control panel. I have gone through other descriptions of this problem in this forum, but have not found an answer. Does anybody know the solution that would allow me to revert to a normal mouse click function. I am at my wits end, and am tired of having to move the mouse to a neutral area every time I want to do something on the computer!
Please, solutions only. (I have a feeling there is no solution to the problem, because this computer is three years old, other people have reported the problem, and there has been no report of the problem being fixed.)

Have you got a Pointing Device?
The touch stick has a feature that does a double-click when you tap on the top of the touch stick. It can be over-sensitive and be set off by vibration or a slight touch in passing. You can go into control panel and shut it off.
Select the "Stick" tab, and uncheck the box marked "Tapping".
If this does not help, just turn it on againelscot

I've been experiencing the exact same problem on my new DELL laptop. The fix I found was to visit the following website and run the edit entitled "Enable or Disable Active Window Tracking" which is found on line 171 on the page. Click the DISABLE link and presto... no more hovering mouse.

Finally, someone figured it out. Thank you so much.
What I don't understand is Dell doesn't even seem to know the problem exists, yet it seems to be on just their laptops, and since the problem is in the registry, they must be setting the enable switch when they download the operating system.
This has been one of the most debilitating problems I have ever had on a computer because it has required constant vigilance in placing the location of the arrow or "I" cursor; that vigilance really wrecks the concentration when you are writing!
Again, thank you!

Working with a Dell XPS laptop and a Cypress Trackpad, I finally turned the Trackpad OFF and use a mouse alone. Seems to be working.
Settings->Touchpad->Additional settings->Cypress Trackpad tab->"Click to change Cypress Trackpad Settings"->Trackpad On/Off.
