How could I shut down my system Windows XP when it hangs there?

It has been hanging there for a half hour now.

Press & hold the power button for 5 seconds - that should do it.

I used CD to repair the XP Home Edition, then I was aksed to enter password. I entered blank. click on OK. then system told me the system is locked and ask me for password. I don't have password and can't login. What's the problem? Sometimes just hangs there giving all kinds of error message.

Below is the link which discusses the issue.
