How do I know what programs to uninstall?

Could someone help me try to figure out what to uninstall. My computer has been running really slow (Inspirion 1100) and I have been getting rid of anything that I don't use. But I have noticed that there are alot of things on there and I am not sure if I should delete them. I have a little icon in the lower right hand corner of my computer that is for windows messenger, it never signs on, I don't know where it came from and I don't use it. I can not find where it is to get rid of it. I have all these things on here that came on with the computer such as:
the Dell jukebox ( don't use)
Jasc paint shop pro Dell version (don't use) and a Jasc Photo Album (Don't use)
DVD sentry (don't know what it is)
Dell Solution center (do I have to have this)
Dell  Support (do I have to have this too?)
Internet Explorer Q831167 (what is this?)
Microsoft money and microsoft system pack (don't use)
modem helper
Outlook Express 837009
QuickSet
Sonic DLA
Sonic Update manager
Windows XP Hotfix KB842773

Sorry a long list but can anyone help me figure out if I need this stuff or if I can get rid of it?
Thank you in advance!

abcbrooks,

Here are the one(s) i'd un-install:
---
Jasc paint shop pro Dell version (don't use) and a Jasc Photo Album (Don't use)
---

These, and others like them you do need:
---
Inter Explorer Q831167 (see here: http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?st=b&na=88&View=en-us&qu=Q831167 )
Outlook Express 837009
Windows XP Hotfix KB842773
Sonic DLA (Allows drag and dropping of files onto cd-r, cd-rw)
Sonic Update manager (Probably keeps Sonic DLA upto date - checks for updates)
---

I'll leave these upto you:
---
Microsoft money and microsoft system pack (don't use)
modem helper (Helps to test and configure your dialup modem)
QuickSet (see here: http://computercops.biz/startuplist-2933.html )
DVD sentry (see here: http://computercops.biz/startuplist-1037.html )
Dell Solution center (You can also re-run this from the 'support' cd)
Dell Support (wasn't designed to work with SP2)
---

Also, to make sure you don't have any other problems on your pc, download and run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then "Save log". Copy/paste the results back to this thread. Don't fix anything, since most of what it reports is good. This will help us to see what's currently running on your computer, and whether you should take other steps to remove any adware/spyware/malware that's found. Those types of problems are also responsible for computer slow downs.

abccbrooks,

You can get rid of Windows Messenger with the procedure here. As far as your list goes, I can offer the following for items I am familiar with:

Dell jukebox, Jasc paint shop pro Dell version and a Jasc Photo Album, Dell Solution center, Dell Support and Microsoft Money can all be removed through Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Internet Explorer Q831167 is a critical update as is Windows XP Hotfix KB842773. What you do with them depends on where they are listed. Please specify.

If you're trying to get the computer to run faster, I'd also try and take a look at what programs/processes are running at startup time... Getting rid un-needed things there is likely to have the greatest impact for you..

Like the others have said.. you can un-install things like the PaintShopPro and MS Money etc.. but i doubt that removing them would help your system performance much at all... (though it would free up some good hard drive space!)
