How do I read Notepad Windows 97 & 98 Documents on XP?

I have been sent Notepad 97 & 98 Documents.  I'm running XP, and all I get is machine code text!  I've worked out how to run old 98 software on XP (thanks to the Help & Support Center.)  Is there a simple 'Patch' available to enable the XP Reader, or do I have to install 97 & 98 to read these documents?

Francis,

Notepad can save only text (*.txt) documents by default. Wordpad can save in more formats. What is the extension of the files you are trying to read?

Francis2811,

Although the version numbers of the "Applies to" programs is different, it appears that the documents you are trying to open contain graphics (and are probably Word files). There is a link in that document to download the Word97-2000 Import Conversion Filters which may resolve the problem.

I cannot see any file extension.  I have looked at the Advanced Tab.  When I open the file, the Microsoft Word 97 Conversion Window opens, and says: '! unable to load graphics conversion filter'.
