How to reduce Vista partition

Question

Hi! I have a Dimension 9200 with Windows Vista installed and I would like to split the OS partition into some other ones. I've tried with the disk management tool that comes with Vista, but it only allows to reduce it to aproximatly half the size. I want to reduce Vista partition to 60 Gb. more or less. How could I do that? I read that if I use a partitioning tool like Partition Magic and I resize the partition, then Vista won't boot. I hope you can help me. Thanks in advance.

I used this software to reduce mine.  http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/  be sure to get the latest version from this website to ensure Vista compatibility.   What I did, I installed the Acronis software, used the media builder function to create a bootable CD, booted from the CD and resized the C partition to the size I wanted, 40GB minimum for Vista.   As with any partition software, there is always risk involved in using it.   If for some reason the system will not boot afterwords, you can boot from the Vista CD and do a startup repair.   http://vistasupport.mvps.org/windows_vista_repair_options.htm

Ok, so I understand that after Acronis resizes Vista partition, it should boot as before (I mean it shouldn't be necessary to try with Vista repair). Thank for the info.

Try defragging first. It is possible that this will gain you more space.

However there may be system files that are fixed in place on the disk - if they can't be moved, then that will limit the available shrink space.
