How to remove AOL companion?

Hello everyone,
I seem to have AOL Companion which appears as a small tool bar that pops up whenever I connect to the internet for the very first time. It has a greenish border around this tool bar, which can appear as a slender rectangle shaped bar, or a rather pudgy more of a square like tool bar (in other words, you can control the size of this tool bar). Once I lick it to turn it off, it never appears again, even if I connect to the internet. The next time it appears after I click it off is, after I turn the computer off completely then turn it back on again. It will not pop up even after coming out of standby, or hibernate.

I do not use AOL whatsoever, never have. I have Windows XP, and I went to the Start button at the left hand side of the screen, then to All Programs, then found a folder for AOL, but did not find it there.

Do you have any suggestions for removing this annoying AOL Companion tool bar?

Thank you for any input.

Go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and look for AOL.

Uninstall any AOL entries here

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply. The thing with AOL, is that in the ADD/Remove programs it says which version to remove? Also, I remember once when someone tried to remove AOL, it started a chain reaction of things that begin to go wrong for the computer system. One after another, things that worked prior to the removal of AOL no longer worked and the entire system became unstable. This happened not just to one person but I've heard it happen to a number of people. In the end, people had to re-install their OS. So, is there a way to either disable or remove just the AOL Companion?

Look for it in these places and disable/remove it.

While you are at it, disable everything not needed in msconfig
1) Start/Run and type in
msconfig
OK
Startup Tab

Keep the page open then go to link below. It will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not. It will also identify any malware.  Disable everything which is not needed to run at start up

Read the Key at top of page. Use the Search box to check all your entries

When you reboot you will get a message saying you have started in "Selective Startup"  Click "Don`t show this message again" then OK

2) Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder

3) Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder
