How To Repair Install Win XP MCE w/SP3
I have a Dell XPS 600, Since purchased I've updated to SP3 on Windows XP Media Center 2005 (Rollup 2). When I inserted the Win OS CD that came included in my original system, it tells me that my OP Sys is new than the one on the DVD. That's probably due to having updated to SP3 when it became available. The Op Sys DVD that came with the system included SP2.
1) How am I going to do a Repair Install of Win XP Media Center 2005-not a "reformat" install.
2) I've requested that Dell send me replacement media - will that DVD include SP3?
3) Or is the only way by creating a separate CD with XP Media Center and SP3 (which already includes SP2) via a Slipstream CD .
4) If so, which files to do add to the CD (which folders do I ignore), since there's a lot of extra files on the DVD making the Op Sys plus those files larger then 600 MB.
Thanks!

Hi there Roger
Just adding to help already provided by Rick
Don’t know why you want to run Repair Install?
Did you consider using Setup option 2 (letter R key) to launch Recovery Console instead?
Anyway – moving on
PATA boot device
From System Setup (BIOS) settings, assume PATA-0 is your CD drive & PATA-1 is the DVD drive?
If correct, the check BIOS controller details, PATA-0 port will indicate Master & PATA-1 as Slave
So if you want to boot from DVD drive (PATA-1) then yes you will need to use cable select jumper
Explained here
XP Setup Repair
Since you are at present able to boot load XP, then Repair option should be available
From XP Setup screen select option 1 (Enter key) to set up Windows XP now
Press F8 key to agree Licence Agreement
Only if an existing XP OS is found you will be presented with another Setup screen that includes Repair option
If Repair option doesn’t appear then press the F3 key to quit, otherwise you will end up doing a Clean Install that will most definitely format/wipe present HDD OS partition :emotion-9:
XP SP3
If you get the “newer version” message & it prevents Repair Install & you don’t want to slipstream SP3
Then you can Repair from XP SP2 media if you can first remove XP SP3
Albeit the Remove option button doesn’t appear for SP3 in my Add/Remove Programs utility, but the $NtServicePackUninstall$ file folder is still available to enable removal
Checkout XP SP3 various removal methods described in MS KB article 950249 :emotion-55:

skier7667,
These are the instruction for a repair installation on XP. Please note that the repair installation will give you XP SP2 and you will need to download SP3 again, unless you want to make a slipstream disk using nLite
Insert your operating system disk and restart your computer.
Press any key to boot from CD.
Choose install.
Do the agreement.
Now choose repair. Leave the disk in until you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes. You will need to get all the Windows Updates, again.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the quick reply. A couple of questions.
1) You mention - "Press any key to boot from the CD", however Dell provided a DVD. I believe the DVD drive is jumpered as a slave and my CD drive as master/primary. I've accessed the BIOS, but it doesn't allow the option to make the DVD bootable with regard to order sequence, only allows changing the order for a CD drive (unless it means CD and/or DVD, don't know). So am I correct that I will have to change the jumper to make the DVD drive master and the CD drive slave in order to boot from the DVD?
2) Are you saying that even though I don't have SP3 on the DVD that Dell sent me yesterday, once I boot up successfully from the DVD, that it will allow the installation to proceed and remove SP3? Yes I understand I'll have to reinstall SP3 and other related updated after the "repair".
3) OR should I remove SP3 first then boot up with the DVD?
Reason I say this is because I've inserted the DVD with XP Media Center 2005 up and running and it comes up with an error message that tells me the op sys I'm running is newer than the one on the DVD disc, probably because I've updated to SP3.
I trust that the reinstallation DVD that Dell sends will allow the "Repair" option and won't bypass that step attempting to reinstall the op sys from scratch and format the drive. Am I correct with this assumption?
Let me know.
Thanks,
Roger

Roger,
Just make sure the Bios is set for boot sequence for CD/DVD before the Hard Drive(HDD) Insert the disk in the master.
Yes, it will repair Windows back to SP2. All Windows Updates will be needed, again.
