I can't remove an item on Startup!
I have XP OS and I can't remove an item from startup (it's an OKI printer)...not originally installed by me.
I've used the System Configuration Utility...RUN > msconfig. This does stop the program, but I then get a message "Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and utlity to run every timeWindows starts"...It invites me to undo the changes I've made. If I then choose Normal startup, I'm back where I started! So I could stop the OKI Utility box appearing, but I'd get the System Configuration Box instead!
I've also tried RUN > services.msc......but OKI Ulities isn't included on the list of items! So I don't know what to do next!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Pete

After you run msconfig and reboot, doesn't it give you a "Don't show this again" check box along with that warning about running in selective startup mode? If you put a check in that box it won't pester you again about any changes you made in msconfig unless/until the next time you change something.
If that doesn't put an end to it, you could remove the offending item from the Startup folder. Click Start>Programs>Startup. If the Oki software is shown there, drag it out of the Startup folder onto the desktop and then into the Recycle Bin.
If it's not shown in the Startup folder, and you have the free Spybot Search and Destroy installed, you can do this:
Launch Spybot
Click Mode on toolbar and set it to Advanced (accept the warning notice). Some new buttons will appear on the left edge of the window
Expand the list under Tools and click System Startup
Find and select the item related to the Oki software and click "X Delete" at top of the window. Make certain only the Oki item is highlighted before deleting.
Reboot and the problem should be fixed. You will still have some files and folders related to that software on the hard drive but you can drag them into the Recycle Bin and delete them.

Why don't you just un-install the program?
Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Program

Hi,
That's the first thing I did.
There is still 0.21 MB left of the problem Utility...looking at the Add/Remove Programs Utility.
I then went to Programs > to the application directly, and clicked on Uninstall. I then get a message from Setup.exe, which says "setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close etc".
That's when I contacted this Forum looking for help!
Regards

Many thanks Ron, and thanks for taking the time to write such a clear and helpful reply.
I think I've now deleted all traces of the offending files!
Kind Regards
Pete
