I just downloaded the Java 6 update.  I can't open Java from the icon, only if I go to a site that activates it.   I still have J2SE runtime Environment 5.0 update 6, 7, and 11 in my Add/Remove.  Also I have Jave 2 Runtime Enviornment SE v1.4.2_03.   Should I be removing them?  I'm wondering if I shouldn't just uninstall everything and start all over?  Any suggestions?

Thanks to all of you for your info.  Two questions.  Should I uninstall the Java 6 that I just downloaded and start fresh?  Also when I go into search I have a HUGE amount of files for java.  should I delete ALL of them.  If I don't uninstall Java 6 should I just delete all the files with dates other than the date I downloaded 6?   I don't want to delete something I shouldn't.   Thanks for your help.  Hope I don't sound stupid.

Remove Jave 2 Runtime Enviornment SE v1.4.2_03 via add/remove.

You don't need  J2SE.I would remove them.

Now update.

I removed all of mine and found no need to reinstall more than one, version 6 update 2, aka version 1.6.0.20 I believe it is. Some users may need more than one version, depending on what software they run.

Someone(?) recently posted a link to this Secunia utility for detecting the version (and reporting if there are security updates available) of various installed software. I like it. I thought it was a Securia utility at first, but now I see they are two different companies.

"Should I uninstall the Java 6 that I just downloaded and start fresh?"

I would.

I would also lose all types of java in add/remove

Than I would run ccleaner and use the registry button, than use the cleaner button, reboot, install the updated version.

if you use ccleaner with the registry feature back up first.

Thank you tomron for the info.  I think I have everything working right now.  I do the ccleaner periodically but I don't undertand about the registry button, and--I'm afraid to mess with anything that has to do with registry. I removed all the java from add/remove.  I guess all the files that are found during "search" have to do with files of things I've used with other things, probably best to leave them all there.  I'm just a novice user here  lol.  Thanks again, I think I'm working fine now.

Java just recently issued a new update, JRE 6 update 3  (build 1.6.0_03-b05; or 6.0.30.5 per Secunia)... see here:
