IDE Controller reverts to PIO mode Dimension 3000
I have a Dimension 3000 3.0GHz Pentium 4; 80GB HD; 512mb RAM; Windows XP Pro SP2 - It has not been fully loaded with programs because sometime after the computer was installed, it began running very slow. Turns out that the IDE Controller for the primary drive (0) has a "DMA when available" setting, but the actual setting is "PIO". This is the likely reason for very slow operation. The secondary CD/DVD drives are set as "ultra DMA mode 2".
There seems to be a lot of potential causes for this reversion to PIO operation, but so far, I haven't been able to find how to get the IDE Controller back to the DMA or ultra DMA setting so that I will be able to multi-task and use xp and other newer programs effectively. Any ideas on the fix?

I fixed this myself. After searching for it on Google, I found a software forum (not Dell or MS) that had a simple suggestion. I uninstalled the primary channel driver and re-booted Windows, which found "new hardware". I was instructed to reboot again and I was amazed to find an IDE ultra DMA Mode 5 controlling my primary hard drive. So far, the problem is solved.
I got no replies on this or on the Dell First time users Board.
