IE8, internet options apply button grayed out.
I was on microsoft's website first and tried uninstalling ie8 and reinstalling. This did not work. My operating system is xp pro svc pk 3. I want to enable tabbed browsing. It shows enabled in internet options. One fix was to disable and then reable but the apply button was not activated either time. Another fix was to check if my antivirus program was the culprit, but that was not the case. Is there a solution to this problem?

Bugbatter, My question of apply button greyed out was answered by dell. Evidently I was not making changes in the right window, but the operator showed me that indeed tabbed and untabbed were working properly. I will mark this as closed and go to the malware forum as you suggested. Thank you very much, I really appreciate all your assistance.

Have you tried using Chrome, it's a lot better than IE 8.

Bacillus, Thank you but I have already tried that. I've been in the registry to look for restrictions, (Single user, single computer), could not find any, made changes in other sections, some have apply, some do not. Run scans daily. Run Dell PC Tuneup daily. I have run with add-ons and without add-ons. I have reset internet options to default. Run MS fix-it. I don't really need tabbed browsing because I can just use the back button or history and get to a previous site. Thank you anyway.
RobinBredin, Thank you but I have no other issues with IE8, and I do not want to clutter up my computer with several search engines.

Are you using security, such as Spybot's Teatimer, Ad-aware's Adwatch, or other programs that "immunize" or prevent registry changes?

Bugbatter, I did not know that another browser is necessary. Is not bing or msn an alternate? The only security I use is StopSign for the last few years. I have cancelled them as of today and use MS security essentials now because it is free. Thank you for your assistance.

You're welcome.
They are not browsers. IE, Mozilla Firefox, and Chrome are browsers. It appears that StopSign has a rather shady reputation. You might want to post in the malware removal forum to see if one of the trained security analysts can review some diagnostic logs from your computer to see if StopSign was protecting you well, and if all remnants were removed cleanly when you removed it.
Logs are read on the Malware Removal Forum.

Bugbatter, No, I had called dell on an issue with my pc tune up and asked them this question at the same time.
