iis does not work on my new dell system

Hi, I have a new 4600. I installed IIS and .netframework 1.1 , fixes and all updates from Microsoft. After install, IIS is showing as up and running via  "services" in Adminitrative tools, However I cannot access the Server from my brwoser, either EI 6.0 or Netscape 7,1, using //localhost/iishelp or anything else from //localhost/ for that matter. Also no errors in the "Events viewer".

Right now there two incidents open within the last 48 hours  on this very subject on the IISFAQ forum both with Dell systems. I have an older IBM system sitting right next to this new 4600 and IIS works great on the IBM system. I have been trying to solve this problem all week with no success. I have seen notes on this forum back almost 6 months with a similar problem but no solution.

I have Visual Studio ready to go and web site work to do but  I am held up by this problem. I need a resolution, I will gladly pay for it. Please either help via this forum or suggest a phonenumber I can call for paid help. Esentially it looks like IIS does not work with current Dell systems. That renders the system useless for my appliaction. I have tried phone assistanec through Dell but cannot seem to get through on the phone.

Are you running windows xp home or xp pro.  IIS does not run in XP Home although some say they can get it to work.  Instructions are here if you are using XP Home.  Use at your own risk.

Hi, I am using Windows XP Pro, it is at the same service level on both my systems, but the IBM system works and Dell does not. No errors in the system viewer. Several hits pertaining to Dell and IIS as I mentioned in my first post. I wonder if someone at Dell has taken one of these systems at the level about a month or two ago and installed iis and just tried to use "//localhost/iishelp" ? I suspect either the iis stuff on the system is incomplete or some obscure setting in the system that is incorrect. I would really appreciate a solution.

Thanks,  Don..

I think I have your answer! I had same problems and have finally fixed it! After searching and searching through various forums (with no answers by the way) and speaking with a tech guy with our web host company (who was completely at awe at why it wouldn't work since he went over everything with me), I had a hunch about a lot of the posts I was reading. A lot of people with the same problem had new Dell or Gateway computers with pre-installed OS's and pre-installed McAfee. So I uninstalled McAfee (exiting it or disabling it doesn't work) and would you believe it worked right away?

If you have McAfee, get rid of it and then try it.

Hope this helps!

I would be interested if that is the fix to the problem.  If so, it just reinforces my opinion of McAfee junk.

I have the same problem with IIS, however, I cannot see my web server's root folders in IIS managers. This has been bothering me for quite sometime. I did try and uninstall IIS and then reinstall IIS many times. This did not work either. I even Installed a "clean" version of Windows XP Pro and the problem never correct itself. I still cannot use my IIS Server. I run Norton Firewall and Norton Anti-Virus and no I did not block the webserver with the firewall I checked my firewall rules. If anyone has any ideas could they email me, thanks. timejak.

Hi, I installed Norton's Firewall and had the same problem as I did with McAfee's Firewall. I uninstalled Norton's Firewall and all worked well. I now use the XP Firewall but will probably switch to a hardware Firewall in the future.
