index.dat files Question

Concerning XP Home SP1.
 
Is there a way to view the index.dat files that are on the computer?

Yes, some is jibberish:

Double click on the index.dat file.

It will tell you Windows cannot open the file.

click the option "Select the program from a list" OK

In the list, choose Notepad, or Wordpad. OK

If it is a large file, it may take awhile to open, but it does work.

There are some free utilities that translate the gibberish.
