Input signal out of range

I get this message, Input signal out of range ,and I'm asked to set to 1260 * 1024 *60 Hz. if i switch off and reboot it generally starts up ok. However this is now happenig on 1 out of 3 occasions when I start my PC. Can anyone please help.

Set your screen resolution to 800x600 and refresh rate to 75hz. You may have to restart your computer.

Check your Display Properties and make sure they are set correctly for your monitor. You should make sure "Hide Modes this monitor cannot display" is selected in Monitor Properties. Sounds like the resolution of 1260x1024 @60 mhz is your optimal setting. Do you have a LCD flat panel monitor? You should not set the monitor any higher.

Thanks, Yes I have a flat screen and the Hide Modes this monitor cannot display" is selected . When I changed the reslolution to 800*60 @75hz, the desktop icons became "giants" Have you any further advice
