Inspirion 6000 - Cannot get past BLUE SCREEN

Question

HELP!!!  On my Dell Inspirion 6000, I got a blue screen and am not able to get out of it.  can't even go to windows in safe mode.  Urgent, please help.   Error is: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x89B7AA98, 0x00000102, 0x00000000)   Tried rebooting many times to no avail.  Sometimes the parameters inside the parenthesis are different.  But it's pretty consistent with the 0x00000024.  Help please   Tried running simple diagnostics and one test failed   DST failed or something similar ERROR: 1000-0142 MSG: Unit 4: Drive Self Test Failed    Status byte: 70   What does this mean?  Help please

That blue screen can be fixed with a CHKDSK /R You need your Windows CD, boot to it, select the repair option, and at the recovery console type CHKDSK /R, It is a long process, so you will need to leave the computer doing that.

I don't think I have a 'Windows CD' is there another way to run Chkdsk /f?

TYVM.   How do I run Checkdsk?  When I boot the comp., sometimes it will automatically go to a blue screen and other times it asks me to log in then takes me to a blue screen.  I have no DOS prompt to enter cmds and can't get into Windows even in safe mode or last working environment.  Also error says to prevent further damage it will not start windows, etc. etc.   Please advise how to 'Chkdsk /F' and will this affect the files in any way on the computer?  I need to retrieve the critical files and have no current backup.  Help pls. again

You have to boot to the XP CD, by pressing F12 when you see the Dell screen, you'll get a boot menu, selecting the CD drive you will be prompted to press "any" key to start from CD.

in there you'll get the option to repair (by pressing R) and you will get the C prompt, and this will not make you lose your info.

I need to retrieve the critical files and have no current backup.

After that, I recommend to do a backup and reinstall Windows, to avoid it wont happens again

If a friend of you have a Dell computer you can use that CD to do this.

You can take the HDD out of the computer, put it in another computer and run CHKDSK from there (going to START - My computer - right click on your HDD and selecting properties, tools tab, and check for errors)
