Inspiron 3585
Can anyone advise as to why my laptop cannot be upgraded to windows 11? I have a AMD Ryzen 5 2500U processor and this seems to be the only thing preventing me from upgrading. I am not very technically minded but I have discovered that the 2500X is supported. What difference does it make?
I have read up a little about 'hacks' and various other methods of upgrading but would be nervous about 'messing about' with my device.

The biggest difference is a change to the fTPM (the TPM built into the Zen core). The one from the first generation does not support Windows 11 requirements. The one from the second and subsequent generations, do (it's in line with Microsoft not supporting Intel CPUs prior to the 9th generation).
Microsoft clearly intends to continue upping the CPU floor for Windows 11 (there is hard evidence that will soon see the 11th generation Intel CPUs being the minimum requirement). Until AMD and Microsoft weigh in on the issue, no one will know whether a similar shift will apply to the Ryzen CPUs.

The 2500U is a first-gen Ryzen CPU, which is not supported by Widnows 11.
Despite the similar model number, the 2500X is a desktop CPU from the second-gen Ryzen architecture, which IS supported by Windows 11.

@ejn63 Thank you for your very quick response. Can I ask a slightly different question? What is the difference between the 2500U and all the other Ryzen 5 processors which are compatible with windows 11?

Sometimes update issues can be fixed by restarting the device or checking your internet connection. Also, make sure you have enough storage space. Hope this helps!
