Inspiron 6000 - svchost.exe

Question

I am using an Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP Professional.   On occasion, an svchost.exe process with take up all of my CPU resources for an indefinite period of time. I searched the Web for this process name and found that it has to do with networking. There are many svchost processes running at any given time. I have taken to terminating the offending process when it starts to use 100% CPU. I have not observed any ill effects of killing it.   How do I deal with this problem (besides killing the process)? svchost.exe using 100% CPU can have many causes including nasties. Have you run scans for all the different types of malware

1.check msconfig
Start/Run and type in
msconfig
OK

Startup Tab
Keep the page open then go to link below. It will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not. It will also identify any malware. Disable everything which is not needed to run at start up

Read the Key at top of page. Use the Search box to check all your entries

2. Check all the Processes in Taskmanager.

Process Explorer is a good program and will tell you what all the processes are

3. Win Explorer/Folder Options/View
Uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers"
