Installing software

In installing new software (or uninstalling something) what is the advisable procedure: close all open programs? Everything in the system tray that can be closed? Most things that come up with a alt-shft-del? Temporary files? Recycle bin? How much of this is necessary?

Interesting read here...

In reference to Frank-M's original post: I have had a few uninstall problems in the past (some earthlink software) that was originally installed offline with antivirus software enabled. Had to do a manual uninstall because the add/remove could not uninstall the program. Had to use SafeMode because computer refused to delete specific files that were in use by lord knows what. Do you think the antivirus software could have caused this uninstaller problem? Is Safe Mode a bad way to "work" with Installations and/or uninstallations?
