Installing Windows 7 on a Vostro 3360 (No Wireless)
Hi!
Just bought Vostro 3360. It came with Ubuntu 11 on board. When I first used it everything worked fine - in Ubuntu I could use WiFi connected to my home router. I decided to put Windows 7 on. So I installed it and went on Dell to get drivers. So I gave my Service Tag and I got the drivers list, downloaded it, installed, so far so good, but....
I realised:
1. I don't have Wireless connections in Windows.
2. Windows doesn't show any Wireless card on board.
3. There was no wireless driver offered me by Dell within my service tag.
I checked My Devices and it shows 2 things without drivers - Network controller and SM Bus controller. Trying to update drivers for them gave nothing - it can't find them neither automatically, nor manually.
So I tried to download 3 optionall Wireless drivers for Vostro 3360 from Dell, but none of them did the thing. All the installers just finish and nothing happens.
Please HELP!!! This drives me crazy!

Rick I have brought the thread back together and moved it in its entirety to the Microsoft OS forum board and relabelled accordingly. It was getting a little confusing otherwise.
lllypa how far have you got with regards to installation of Windows 7? I assume you have the Operating System installed, do you have Service Pack 1 installed? You are running the 64 bit version or the 32 bit version? Install the following:
Chipset drivers Intel Chipset HM77, Intel Management Engine Interface, Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller, Realtek Card Reader
Intel Rapid Storage Technology
Video Driver (64 bit)
STMicroelectronics 3-Axis Digital Accelerometer
Ethernet Driver
Alps Touchpad
Audio Driver
Validity Sensor Fingerprint Driver
With regards to customisation in this model. Do you know what your wireless card is?
It should be either a Dell Wireless 1703, Dell Wireless 1704 or Dell Wireless 1901
There is also an Intel Advanced-N 2230 Wireless/Bluetooth Driver alongside Intel Smart Connect Technology.
The first 3 are on the Dell Drivers and Downloads Page and are presumably the ones you have tried. The Intel one is a Network Driver but is listed under Network Applications on the Dell FTP website (despite being a driver) and there is no mention of it on the Dell Drivers and Downloads Page. It could be your missing driver, I think Dell are also more likely to put Intel Drivers for Linux systems as Ubuntu has better support for them. If ensure, connect via an ethernet cable and run the Intel(R) Driver Update Utility Wireless.

Do you have any optional Communication Drivers? After installation of all the above can you carry out Step 12 of A Clean Install of Windows 7?

lllypa,
When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the Desktop/Notebook system software(if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
Start with the Desktop/Notebook system software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.

I did install chipset the very first, but I have no idea what is Notebook system software. I guess there is none for the Vostro 3360, because I don't see any in a driver list.
But there is still 1 question remaining - WHY there's no wireless driver in my service tag list?? Does this mean that windows should have install it automatically for my wireless card/chip?

There is no Notebook System Software for this model, start with the chipset drivers and follow the list.
Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and post the information back here.

I just realised that DELL doesn't even offer chipset driver for my service tag - only if I choose it manually for the product itself!
WOW! What's wrong with my service tag? or Dell..?

Reinstalled windows, installed drivers in the proper order, but same thing... No wireless appears, windows can't find any driver for the network controller, and trying to install Dell offered Wireless drivers (3 of them) gives nothing - installations just finish quickly and it looks like nothing happens or changes...
???

And what do I get? Ubuntu again?! My aim was to install and use Windows system. And the question is simple - how do I get the wireless card driver?
Thanks for the support anyways! Just VERY! Very... upset with DELL!.. =( Waisted money - basically I'm having a piece of metal at the moment with no WiFi...

This was apparently moved to the Microsoft OS Forum from another forum to which I do not subscribe, so I don't know the history or details.
What model is your system?
What version of Windows are you trying to install?
32-bit or 64-bit?
What wifi card do you have (right-click in Device Manager, Properties, Details tab, change dropdown to Hardware Ids, and post VEN and DEV ID's)?
Why is Ubuntu being discussed?
Chances are that there is no reason to be upset with Dell and that there is a very simple fix for this ... we can help you to know where to look.

I had our last thread split off and posted in another forum. The people in that forum have elped many with installing the operating system from the begining and I would follow their advice.

To get what? Ubuntu back again?! I want to get and use Windows system. And the question is simple - how do I get a proper Wireless card driver???
Thanks for support anyways! Just very upset with DELL... =( Feeling like waisted money on a new laptop, as it's a piece of metal at the moment without WiFi.

In this case, I'm not sure why the entire thread was not moved ... I figured it was just a "me too" tacked onto the end of someone else's [irrelevant] thread - and in that case, I wasn't going to go digging it up.
At any rate, if Dell shipped this system with Ubuntu, then you shouldn't expect Windows 7 drivers to be presented to you when you put in your Service Tag :) Skip the Service Tag, as that service is undergoing construction anyway, and just choose your model, then your OS.
Assuming that you have a valid license for Windows 7, then make sure these are installed and that you have rebooted before finding the DEV/VEN ID's and/or attempting to install the wireless drivers:
Chipset:
www.dell.com/.../vostro-3360
Intel Management Engine Interface:
www.dell.com/.../vostro-3360
Still need the DEV and VEN ID's to know exactly which of the four options you physically have in your system.
